British citizenship for a child of 13, although he was born and lived in the UK

We were contacted by the parents of a boy who was born in the UK, but did not have UK citizenship until the age of 13. I tell you why this happened, and how we got British citizenship for the child.

What did the customers come with?

Alex is a 13 y.o. boy, born in England. His mother is a citizen of one of the countries of the Commonwealth countries, and his father is a citizen of Ukraine.

At the time of the child’s birth, the father was in the UK illegally, so it was not possible for the child to issue a British passport. The parents decided to wait until the boy turns 10 y. o.

When Alex turned 13, they decided to try applying for UK citizenship for him. By that time, his father had already received British residency under the Ukrainian scheme (BRP-card).

The parents doubted whether they would be able to obtain British citizenship for the child. However, we explained to them that according to the UK Immigration Laws, a child has the right to apply for British citizenship upon reaching the age of 10. Parents also have the right to submit documents with their child. But they wanted to be sure that the child would actually receive citizenship, and only then join his status.

What have we done for Alex?

On June 7, 2024, we filed in an application online. On June 13, Alex submitted biometric data, and on August 14, that is, in just 2 months, he received a certificate of British citizenship. Although the review under this scheme can last up to 6 months.

After that, with this certificate, he submitted documents for a passport. As an evidence base, we have attached a birth certificate, a letter from the school, documents from parents and other necessary papers.

Congratulations to Alex on obtaining UK citizenship! Now we are preparing documents for parents so that they can join the child’s status.
