Using the Points-based System, non-EEA nationals can apply for a student visa to study in the UK. UK schools, colleges, and universities are known for offering top-level education. One of the most popular options for students looking to study in the UK is universities.

A Student Visa is applied for when a student has an unconditional offer from a Licensed Sponsor and can demonstrate that they have sufficient maintenance funds to maintain themselves during their stay in the UK while studying.

1. Student visas for adults

1.1. What courses can you study in the UK?

1.2. Requirements for a Student visa

You can apply for a UK Student Visa 3 months before starting your course, most applications are processed within 3 weeks of submission. To confirm that you are a real student, the UKVI may interview the applicant. If you pursue a postgraduate degree, you are also permitted to bring your family and dependents to the UK.

To be successful in your application you will need to meet the UK Student Visa requirements. You have to provide:

  • current passport or another valid travel document
  • maintenance funds of £9,207 if you will study outside the UK or £12,006 if the studies will be carried out at a University in London
  • Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS) from your sponsoring institution
  • unconditional offer of study from an approved sponsoring institution
  • TB test result

In addition, you must score at least 70 points on the points-based system. You need to have the relevant academic qualifications needed to take the course and genuinely intend to study in the UK.

Please note the following restrictions when submitting your application:

  • no access to public funds (benefits)
  • avoid taking a job as a professional athlete or sports coach
  • take note of any work restrictions that may apply: you may not be permitted to work a limited number of hours—10 or 20 hours per week—or part-time

The UK Visa fee for a Student Visa application is £490 for the application applying from overseas and the student also needs to pay an Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) of £470 per year depending on the length of the course.

Applications for student-dependant visas may be filed along with the main applicant’s student visa application. It is also feasible for the dependant to apply for a student-dependant visa at a later time in order to accompany the primary applicant. Please note: a Student visa applicant can only sponsor a dependent if they are coming to the UK to study a Postgraduate course.

1.3. What is the English language requirement?

You need to be able to prove that you speak English at a specific level in order to study in the UK. A B2 level is required for studying at a degree level or above, while those studying below that level must demonstrate a B1 level.

The most common way of demonstrating your English ability is to take a SELT (Secure English Language Test) English language test. Among approved SELT test providers are for example Trinity College London and IELTS SELT Consortium. Mind that applicants from major English-speaking countries will not need to fulfil the English language requirements.

1.4. Can I Extend the Student Visa?

Student Visa extensions are possible for students in certain circumstances. Now it is also possible for the old Tier 4 (General) Student Visa to be extended too.

To extend your visa, the following requirements must be met:

  • to provide a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies
  • to be in the UK on a Student Visa or Tier 4 (General) Student Visa
  • to have an unconditional offer on a course with a licenced student sponsor
  • to be able to show that the course is at a higher academic level than your current 
 course

2. Child Student visa

2.1. Who is a Child Student Visa for?

The Child Student Visa is for children who are nationals of a country other than the UK or Ireland.

For a successful application, you must:

  • have an unconditional offer on a course from an eligible independent school
  • show that you have adequate income to pay for the course and to support themselves 
 during the course
  • have the written parent or legal guardian consent to study in the UK

The Tier 4 (Child) Student Visa is no longer in existence, having been replaced by the Child Student Visa.

Six months before the start of your course, you can apply for a visa outside of the UK, and you should get an answer from the authorities within three weeks.

You can apply up to three months before the start date of the course if you are applying within the United Kingdom. You should hear back from the authorities in max. eight weeks.

Holders of a child student visa who are under 16 years old are allowed to stay in the UK for four months in addition to the maximum six-year study duration.

16- and 17-year-old visa holders are allowed to stay for the duration of the course (up to three years) plus an additional four months after the course ends.

If you are eligible, you might be able to extend the visa so you can finish your study in the UK.

2.2. How to apply for the UK Child Student Visa

To give yourself the best chance of success, it is important that you thoroughly prepare before submitting your application for a child student visa:

  1. Apply to the most appropriate educational institute based on your situation and 
 receive an unconditional offer from the school.
  2. Request your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number by sending a 
 request.
  3. Find the nearest visa application centre.
  4. Schedule a tuberculosis test (if applicable) and ascertain the public health protocols 
 for coronaviruses (such as PCR testing, isolation, etc.).
  5. Prepare the relevant supporting documents and fill out the application form.
  6. Pay the application fee and immigration health surcharge (where relevant) to the 
 Home Office.
  7. Book a biometrics appointment at the visa application centre and attend your visa 
 interview (where relevant).
  8. Wait for a decision to be issued on your visa application.
2.3. Parent of a Child Student Visa

You might be able to apply for the Parent of a Child Student Visa if your child already has or is applying for a child student visa.

To be eligible, the following must apply to your case:

  • your child has to be 4-11 years old
  • your child is attending an independent school in the UK
  • you have concrete plans to leave the UK when your visa expires
  • you are the only parent of your child accompanying them in the UK
  • you keep your principal home in the nation where you now reside

You can remain in the UK until your child’s visa expires or until they become 12 years old, whichever comes first. If you meet the requirements, you could be able to extend the visa.

If your child continues studying in the UK after this age, you must make ensure that arrangements are in place to facilitate their ongoing care.

You are not allowed to work, study, open a business, claim benefits, or travel to the UK with another family member while you are in the UK.

Additionally, you are not allowed to establish the UK as your primary residence.

2.4. What documents do you need to apply for the Child Student Visa?

You will need to provide the Home Office with the following documents in order to apply for the Child Student Visa:

  • valid passport or another travel document
  • Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)
  • bank statements or other financial evidence of maintenance and proof of course fee payment (including tuition fees, accommodation costs, etc.)
  • confirmation of consent from parent or guardian
  • health certifications (where relevant)
  • сertified translations of documents in a language other than English or WelshFurther 
 documentation might be needed depending on your situation. You will need to 
 demonstrate a complete set of documents proving your eligibility for the visa.
